Mr. William Richard Munn, Colonel, U.S. Army (Ret), 80, of Orlando, FL, passed away on Tuesday, July 12, 2011. He was born in Athens, Ohio December 16, 1930 and was the youngest son of the late Willie and Cora Munn. Mr. Munn was born and raised near Athens, Ohio. He graduated from Ohio State University in 1952 with a degree in Education, and then enlisted in the United States Army during the Korean War. He completed basic training and was selected for Officer Candidate School, where he was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant upon graduation in 1953. He served 26 years in the U.S. Army and rose to the rank of Colonel. Throughout his distinguished career as an engineer officer, he served two tours in Vietnam, two tours in Germany and commanded the 39th Engineer Battalion during combat operations in Vietnam. He retired in 1978. His professionalism, dedication to duty, and personal integrity were recognized by and earned the respect and admiration of those who served with him. His military awards included two Legions of Merit, the Bronze Star medal, the Meritorious Service Medal, and the Vietnam Cross of Gallantry w/ Palm. Bill retired with his wife, Betty, to Upper Tract, WV in 1979, and was a representative for Shawnee Log Homes. In 1987, they purchased the Ananias Pitsenbarger homestead on Dry Run Road and built their retirement home. Sadly, his beloved wife of 37 years, passed away in 1992. Mr. Munn was a loving and compassionate person, who was a life-long outdoorsman and inveterate traveler. He and his family traveled all over the world, through most of Europe and almost all of the contiguous United States, including driving his RV to Alaska with his 3rd wife, Barbara. His loving and close family meant everything to him. He was so dedicated to his family that he and his wife, Betty moved to Texas and lived in an RV for two years outside the Wilford Hall Medical Center to help care for their critically ill granddaughter, Jill, while she was in the NICU. There was nothing he would not do for his family and friends. In 1998, Mr. Munn reconnected with his former high school girlfriend, Barbara Bean. In 1999 they married and he moved from Pendleton County to Orlando, Florida, which they called home for his final years. He is survived by his current wife, Barbara, his daughter, Betty Lynne Munn, his son, Jeff Munn, his brother, Gerson Munn and his sister, Nita Marie Cordray. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM, Saturday, July 23, 2011 at the Kimble Funeral Home Chapel in Franklin with Rev. Robert Anderson officiating. The family will receive friends at the Kimble Funeral Home from 10:00 AM until the time of service at 11:00 AM on Saturday, July 23. Interment will be at the Munn Family Cemetery on Dry Run Road with full military honors conducted by Members of the Pendleton County Veteran's Honor Guard.
