Paul Goland's Obituary
Mr. Paul Goland, 89, died peacefully in his sleep at his home in Franklin on Tuesday, November 21, 2017.
Born in Los Angeles, California on May 1, 1928, Paul received a B.S. in Business from the University of California at Berkeley, then completed courses in weather observing and forecasting (he enjoyed sending up weather balloons).
After his military service, he worked for the U.S. Civil Service doing administration for weather station staffing.
Although Paul grew up and lived in urban areas, he took to country living with enthusiasm. He first came to Pendleton County in the early 1970s and built a cabin on Snowy Mountain, then moved to Franklin in 1990.
In 1972, he read an article in Organic Gardening magazine about shiitake mushrooms. He became acquainted with the Korean man who wrote the article and his family, visiting with them and learning how to grow shiitake on oak logs. To teach others how to grow their own shiitake, Paul created his business, Hardscrabble Enterprises, providing books, supplies and logs for other growers. He saw using shiitake production, cutting small hardwood trees, as a means of woodlot improvement, creating space for larger, more valuable trees to grow.
Paul became known as "the mushroom man" and learned all he could about wild mushrooms, helping people who dropped by with their finds to identify them.
He is survived by Nan, his wife of 51 years; two sons, Andrew Goland of Bakersfield, California and Phillipe Goland of Pendleton, Oregon; and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Paul will be remembered as a kind, generous, hardworking man who loved his wife and his chainsaw.
All services will be private.
