Mary Kathryn Crummett, formerly of Blue Grass, Virginia, passed away Monday, April 6, 2009 at Bath County Community Hospital in Hot Springs. She was born on February 28, 1922 in Durbin, West Virginia, a daughter of the late George W. and Anna Belle Hoover Hooke. Mary Karthryn was a graduate of McDowell High School and Mary Washington College, where she studied art and education. She traveled to Nevada where she began her early teaching career. In 1948 she relocated to Orange, Virginia, and married Richard Hevener Crummett. The two returned to their farm in Blue Grass and Mary taught in the Highland County Public School System until retirement. She is survived by a son, William Andre Crummett and wife, Darlene of Blue Grass, two granddaughters, Jennifer J. Crummett of Richmond, VA and Laura Crummett Honaker and husband T.J. of Wilmington, NC. Her sister, Dorothy Hooke Garrett is a resident of Baytown, TX. In addition to her husband, Mrs. Crummett is preceded in death by her five brothers, Keith Hooke, George W. Hooke, Jr., Charles Hooke, Robert Hooke and Adolph Hooke, as well as two sisters, Lucille Carlisle and Virginia Hooke. A memorial service will be held in honor of Mary on Friday, April 10, 2009 at 11:00 AM at the Blue Grass United Methodist Church with the Rev. Richard Gibson officiating. The family will receive friends at the church one hour prior to the service. A private burial will be held on her beloved Middle Mountain at a later time.
