Mr. John Edwin Starr, 96, of Franklin, WV and formerly of South Charleston, West Virginia died Saturday, August 4, 2012 at Pendleton Manor in Franklin. He was born September 17, 1915 at Parkersburg, WV and was the son of the late Earl W. and Ruth Patton Starr. Mr. Starr was a chemist at Union Carbide in South Charleston for 34 years, working in the Research and Development Dept. He had also worked for the West Virginia Dept. of Natural Resources in the Water Resources Division for 11 years. John joined the First Presbyterian Church of South Charleston in 1952 and served in various capacities including Sunday School Superintendent, Deacon and Elder, and was selected as an honorary member by the Women of the Church. He was a member of the Carbide Hunting and Fishing Club. While living in Franklin, he faithfully attended Franklin United Methodist Church, where he was active in the Adult Sunday School class. Surviving are - His daughter, son-in-law and grandson, Ruth and Jack Vogel and John Vogel of Franklin, WV, with whom he had made his home for the past 3 1/2 years, and several nieces and nephews. His wife, Eva Virginia Leach Starr, preceded him in death in 2001. Also preceding him in death were four sisters - Jean Owens, Joan Pat Yeager, Grace Gainer and Jeanette Sutton. The family will receive friends from 6:00 - 8:00 PM Thursday, August 9, 2012 at the Kimble Funeral Home in Franklin. A committal service will be held at 2:00 PM Friday, August 10, 2012 at Sunset Memory Gardens, Parkersburg, West Virginia with Jack Vogel officiating. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 PM Saturday, August 18, 2012 at First Presbyterian Church of South Charleston, 508 Second Avenue, South Charleston, WV 25303 with Pastor Gary McGrew officiating.
