Irene Margaret Propst Stone ended life peacefully on Monday, October 26, 2015 at her home in the Virginia Mennonite Retirement Community, Harrisonburg, Va. Her late husband was Charles Marshall Stone. Born near Brandywine, WV on July 16, 1916,Irene was the second of six children of the late Martin Frank Propst and Julia Ann Dickenson Propst. She was the last of her immediate family having been predeceased by her three sisters, Helen B. Lough, Shirley Rexrode, Delsie Mitchell, and two brothers, E. Tyson and Stanley R. Propst. She is survived by nephews, Richard W. Lough of Franklin and Gerald Pitsenbarger of Brandywine, WV, and a niece, Sue Lough Nickels of Staunton, VA. In addition she is survived by great-niece, Paula Pitsenbarger Simmons, and great-nephews Adam Richard Lough and Matthew Bowman Lough. As a young woman, Irene began an enduring courtship with Charles Marshall Stone of Washington, DC while he was visiting friends in the Brandywine area. They were married in 1935 and settled in Northern Virginia where Marshall was employed by the U.S. Postal Department. Bright and ambitious, Irene soon began a career with the U.S. Treasury Department, retiring in 1972. As part of the "greatest generation", Irene and Marshall lived a full life with close friendship and a range of interests, including photography. A few years after Marshall's death in 1969, Irene moved from her longtime home in Falls Church, VA to an apartment at VMRC. Living in Harrisonburg allowed her convenient access to her beloved family farm in Propstburg. On her weekly visits there she particularly loved long walks with her brothers, and appreciated the solitude of Hively Gap. Sometimes she'd cross the Shenandoah Mountain just to be assured that her favorite cat, Blackie, had plenty of food. Irene was known to be capable, hardworking and fiercely independent. Throughout her 99 years, she remained clear of mind and steadfast in her opinions, including the importance of caring for those in need. She supported countless charitable foundations. In keeping with her dedication to the less fortunate, family and friends are invited to make a memorial donation to a charity of their choice. All are welcome to join in a graveside service with interment of ashes on Sunday, November 8, at 2:00 pm at the Propst Cemetery on the family farm in Hively Gap, Brandywine, WV.
