Mr. George H. Crider, Sr., 92, of Brandywine, West Virginia passed away Wednesday, May 15, 2013 at Rockingham Memorial Hospital in Harrisonburg, Virginia. He was born September 19, 1920 at Bergton, Virginia and was the son of the late Noah and Martha Feather Crider. George entered Signal Corps U.S. Army on Janunary 1, 1943 at Camp Lee, Virginia, served in New Guinea, South Philippines and Luzon and was discharged in 1946. He worked in Washington, D.C. from 1949 - 1955 as a bus and streetcar operator. In 1959, he went to work on construction of the Big Dish on the Ridge (Sugar Grove Naval Radio Sattion) until it's completion in 1961. George also worked at the glass plant in Cumberland, MD and from there went to Mt. Storm Power Plant until construction ended in 1967. He was a farmer, and along with his wife and sons, raised poultry. In 1965, they built the first large double decker poultry house in Pendleton County. Fram 1968 - 1987, he worked for the Naval Radio Station at Sugar Grove, retiring January 30, 1987 with 21 years and 5 months of faithful service with the United States Government. George was a member of Calvary Lutheran Church, where he had served for years as President, Superintendent, Trustee and Deacon. He served as Commander of Our Five Boys V.F.W. Post #9666 at Sugar Grove for several years and was a life member. He also served the V.F.W. as District 7 Commander, was a member of the West Virginia Poultry Association and the West Virginia Farm Bureau. George loved to read and travel. On November 6, 1949, he married Myrtle V. Kiser Crider, who survives. Also surviving are three sons - Donald Lee Crider (& his wife, Patricia) of Manassas, VA Danny George Crider (& his wife, Sharon) of Brandywine, WV George H. Crider, Jr. (& his wife, Delores) of Brandywine, WV Seven grandchildren - Amy Crider, Lindsey Crider, April (& Justin) Simmons, Derek (& Amanda) Crider, Travis Crider, Wesley Crider and Holly Crider One great-grandson - Colby Simmons And a number of nieces and nephews George was preceded in death by four brothers, Edward, Jack, Orvil and Sherwood Crider and a half-sister, Myrtle Wittig. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM Sunday, May 19, 2013 at Calvary Lutheran Church at Sugar Grove with Revs. Jason & Jess Felici officiating. Burial will be at Sugar Grove Cemetery with military graveside services conducted by members of the Pendleton County Veterans Honor Guard. Derek Crider, Justin Simmons, Nathan Propst, Gary Simon, Danny Smith and Garland Propst will serve as his pallbearers. The family will receive friends from 6:00 - 8:00 PM Saturday, May 18, 2013 at the Kimble Funeral Home, 80 South Main Street, Franklin, West Virginia.
