Elmer Sponaugle, 86, of Franklin, West Virginia passed away Friday, December 20, 2013 at Rockingham Memorial Hospital in Harrisonburg, Virginia. He was born September 8, 1927 at Hunting Ground, West Virginia and was the son of the late Kennie Sponaugle and Ella Vandevander Sponaugle. Elmer was a logger and had been a mail carrier for 42 years. Along his mail route, Elmer also delivered The Inter-Mountain newspaper and everything from auto parts to washing machines to the power company's meter books. He was a handyman and an avid gardener and was a faithful member of the Friends Run Church of the Brethren, where he served in many capacities including deacon and Adult Sunday School teacher. On November 19, 1949, he married Kathryn Bland Sponaugle (May 9, 1934 - June 3, 2001). Surviving are - Two daughters - Sue Ruddle (& her husband, James) of Franklin, WV Sarah E. George of Franklin, WV Three sons - Elmer Sponaugle, Jr. (& his wife, Sammye) of Grottoes, VA John K. Sponaugle (& his friend, Ruth Bauer) of Franklin, WV Billy C. Sponaugle (& his wife, Lisa) of Franklin, WV One sister - Marie Bennett of Beverly, WV One brother - Ward Sponaugle of Parsons, WV Twelve grandchildren - Jeremy Ann Kump, Jill Kathryn Nesselrodt, Joshua Hanna, Amber Hanna, Jammy A. Ruddle, Jenny Sue Harper, Bobbi George, Nikki Calhoun, Alex George, Molly Godfrey, Megan Cosner and Sam Sponaugle Twelve great-grandchildren - Austyn Elizabeth Kump, Cameron Dale Kump and Jayne Victoria Kump Laikyn Hanna, McKenna Hanna, Piper Hanna, Jessica Ruddle, Emily Ruddle, Andrew Harper, Marshall Harper, Charles Calhoun and Haley Calhoun And a very special friend - Betty Jean Hoover of Franklin, WV Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM Monday, December 23, 2013 at the Chapel of the Kimble Funeral Home in Franklin, West Virginia with Pastor Thomas Hanks officiating. Burial will be in the Cedar Hill Cemetery at Franklin, West Virginia. Friends may call at the Kimble Funeral Home in Franklin after 8:00 AM Sunday. The family will receive friends from 5:00 - 7:00 PM Sunday at the Kimble Funeral Home.
