Mr. Alfred Crigler, 82, of Franklin, West Virginia passed away Thursday, September 25, 2014 at Sentara RMH in Harrisonburg, Virginia. Born September 11, 1932 in Franklin, West Virginia, he was the son of the late Albert Boyd Crigler and Eva Kathryn Lambert Crigler. Alfred was a 1951 graduate of Franklin High School and attended Potomac State College, where he was a member of the Sharp Shooter Team. He also attended West Virginia University and George Washington University. He was a Veteran, having served in the U.S. Army Military Police. He worked as an analyst in the research lab of the Bureau of Standards (now The National Institute of Science and Technology) in Washington, D.C. and Bethesda, Maryland, retiring after 32 years of service. After retirement, Alfred returned to his beloved Pendleton County where he established Hickory Hill Cabins in 1985. He mainly rented cabins to people who lived in other states so that more people could have the opportunity to enjoy what he loved - the beauty of nature in West Virginia. Alfred was a collector of antiques, coins and memorabilia. His passion was collecting coin operated antiques such as slot machines and music boxes, often traveling many miles in search of those treasures. Photography, local history and spending time with friends were his favorite pastimes. Alfred was witty, a great story teller and often times a prankster (always in good fun). He was a member of Franklin Moose Lodge #769. On August 7, 2014, he married Sherry A. Crigler, who survives. Also surviving are - One daughter and son-in-law - Heidi and Mark Connelly of Baltimore, MD Two granddaughters - Alexandra Connelly and Julianna Connelly Nieces and nephews And a host of friends Preceding Alfred in death were his former wife, Wanda Jean Rexrode Crigler (1938 - 1991), and five sisters - Alma C. Hinkle, Irene C. Stickley, Thelma C. Ruddle, Frances C. Glover and Hilda C. Leichsenring. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family. His body was cremated. Visitation for family and friends will be from 6:00 - 8:00 PM Sunday, September 28, 2014 at Kimble Funeral Home, 80 South Main Street, Franklin, West Virginia. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 PM Saturday, October 18, 2014 at Hickory Hill Cabins, Rt. 220 North, Franklin. Memorials may be made to Mountain Hospice, P. O. Box 416, Franklin, WV 26807.
