Mr. Albert Nelson, Jr., 84, of Hinesville, GA and formerly of Upper Tract, WV passed away Sunday, June 1, 2014. He was born October 6, 1929 in Smoke Hole, West Virginia and was the son of the late Albert Nelson, Sr. and Florence Kimble Nelson. Mr. Nelson attended the U.S. Armed Forces Institute in Europe. He was assigned to Europe on two separate tours of duty, retiring from the Army with the rank of Chief Warrant Officer in 1972 after 22+ years of service. He also served in Korea, Vietnam, Thailand, Homestead AF Base, FL and Ft. Meade, MD. He later retired from the Dept. of the Army Civil Service as Manager of the Central Issue Facility, Ft. Stewart, GA after 34 years of service there. Mr. Nelson was a life member of the American Legion and V.F.W. of Hinesville, GA, a 50 year member of the Hinesville Masonic Lodge 271 AF & AM, was Master of the 1st Masonic District, Scottish Rite 33rd Degree, Past Venerable Master of the Scottish Rite and member of the York Rite and National Sojourners. A Shriner and Past Potentate of Alee Temple, Savannah, GA, he was instrumental in forming the Hinesville/Ft. Stewart Shrine Club in Hinesville, was a member of the Scottish Rite Assoc., Worthy Patron of Order of the Eastern Star Chapter #497 and District 28 and 9 Grand Deputy. Albert was a member of the by-laws committee of Grand Lodge of Georgia. He received his 50-year award from the Scottish Rite and Alee Shrine. In honor of his dedication and untiring efforts to promote MASONRY, the Hinesville Lodge declared AL NELSON DAY on April 19, 1984. Surviving is his wife of 60 years, Nellie Heavener Nelson, as well as a number of nieces and nephews and a host of friends. Albert was a protector of animals and rescued and adopted many stray cats and dogs. His favorite dogs and cats, Jake, Baby, Sissy and Snowball survive. Preceding him in death were - Three sisters, Ruth Nelson Kimble, Anna Lee Staggs and Betty Jo Mays and two brothers, Fred Nelson and Roy Nelson. The family will receive friends from 12:00 Noon until 1:00 PM on Friday, June 6, 2014 at the Kimble Funeral Home in Franklin, WV. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 PM on Friday at Kimble Funeral Home with Rev. Bruce Cosner officiating. Entombment will be in the Nelson Mausoleum in Cherry Hill Cemetery, Upper Tract, WV with military honors conducted by members of the Pendleton County Veterans Honor Guard.
